Doug has a four-decade track record of building value for financial services companies through a distinctive combination of strategy, marketing, analytics and technology. He has split his career between EVP roles at three “Top 10” banks and as a senior member of the Financial Services practices at two of the world’s leading Strategy Consulting firms. This experience proves a powerful combination: the problem-solving and communication skills that make a strong consultant, with the pragmatic “get-it-done” and implementation capabilities of a senior operating executive.

Doug has had line-management responsibility for $2B in annual revenues and $50B in deposits. He has run a marketing and communications budget of $600M with over 500 employees. He has overseen all Analytics functions, with a staff of 130, for a top 10 U.S. bank. He was a key player in Fleet’s ascension to one of the largest U.S. banks before its sale to Bank of America.

As CMO of BMO Financial Group (Bank of Montreal), Doug reported directly to the CEO and led a substantial consolidation and transformation of the marketing and communications functions. He led the overall rebranding and repositioning of the company as BMO Harris Bank, and he drove a significant increase in the overall return on marketing investment. As Chief Analytics Officer at SunTrust in Atlanta, he oversaw analytics across all lines of business, as well as many regulatory and credit reporting functions.

During his tenure as a management and strategy consultant, Doug advised many of the world’s largest banks on key issues of strategy and advised many of the top Private Equity firms on some of the largest deals in financial technology. He has advised one of the world’s most successful Hedge Funds on alpha creation; led strategic due diligence on many complex bank carve-outs and divestitures; and worked with the world’s largest retail asset manager on better serving its high-net-worth segment. And he has led pragmatic strategy work – either as Fleet’s head of strategy or at Bain and the Boston Consulting Group – at a corporate and business-unit level for many of the world’s largest banks.

Doug knows the consumer, commercial and institutional financial services businesses inside and out. He understands how they fit together – either in a bank structure or stand-alone – to create a valuable company. He is especially knowledgeable about where and how value is created – at an atomistic customer level – and how to acquire, retain and deepen valuable customer relationships. And he understands where and how analytics and technology can transform business activities.

Doug’s undergraduate degree was a B.S. in Economics, MagnaCum Laude, from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and he also has an MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management.
